Course: 635 - Video Game Design: Characters and Effects – Certificates of Competency

Course DescriptionContinues from Intro to Video Game Design with more complex projects, involving both 3D modeling and game engine integration. Prerequisite for this class:  Video Game Design 1 or teacher consent.

At the end of this course you will be awarded a Certificate of Competency/Completion.

Students earning a grade of A or B will receive the" Certificate of Competency".

Students earning a grade of C will be awarded the "Certificate of Completion".

Students earning a D will not receive a certificate.

Those students earning an A are given a certificate titled "Level Artist".

Those students earning a B are given a certificate titled "Production Assistant".

Those students earning a C are given a certificate titled "Game Studio Assistant".

Below are three lists indicating the skills you should have when awarded one of the three COC's.

 

Level Artist

  1. Demonstrates importance of reading, writing, listening & speaking.
  2. Demonstrates critical thinking and problem solving skills.
  3. Demonstrates practice of workplace health and safety laws.
  4. Demonstrates self-management, positive work ethics, and personal integrity.
  5. Demonstrates collaboration, teamwork, conflict resolution, and leadership skills.
  6. Demonstrates a working knowledge of appropriate technological tool.
  7. Demonstrates understanding of class goals, objectives, guidelines, and careers.
  8. Demonstrates an advanced knowledge of low poly inorganic 3D modeling techniques.
  9. Demonstrates an advanced knowledge of low poly organic 3D modeling techniques.
  10. Demonstrates an advanced knowledge of 3D texturing techniques.
  11. Creates complex, original textures using PhotoShop and Illustrator.
  12. Able to translate textures from PhotoShop to game engine.
  13. Able to translate models from 3D software into game engine.
  14. Demonstrates ability to light scenes for maximum mood and dramatic effect.
  15. Demonstrates advanced knowledge of game engines.
  16. Creates complex environments integrating indoors and outdoors.
  17. Strong knowledge of UDK interface: Content Browser, Material Editor, Static Mesh Editor, Kismet, and Matinee.
  18. Demonstrates exceptional knowledge of game play.
  19. Able to focus on game play for long periods of time.
  20. Exceptional attention to detail.
  21. Maintains a clear filing system.

Production Assistant

  1. Demonstrates importance of reading, writing, listening & speaking.
  2. Demonstrates critical thinking and problem solving skills.

  14. Demonstrates knowledge of basic scene lighting skills.
  15. Demonstrates advanced knowledge of game engines.

  18. Demonstrates exceptional knowledge of game play.

Game Studio Assistant

  1. Demonstrates importance of reading, writing, listening & speaking.
  2. Demonstrates critical thinking and problem solving skills.
  3. Demonstrates practice of workplace health and safety laws.
  4. Demonstrates self-management, positive work ethics, and personal integrity.
  5. Demonstrates collaboration, teamwork, conflict resolution, and leadership skills.
  6. Demonstrates a working knowledge of appropriate technological tool.
  7. Demonstrates understanding of class goals, objectives, guidelines, and careers.
  8. Demonstrates knowledge of 3D modeling techniques needed in game creation.
  9. Uses PhotoShop to create original textures.
  10. Able to translate textures from PhotoShop to game engine.
  11. Able to translate models from 3D software into game engine.
  12. Lights game levels.
  13. Creates both interior environments.
  14. Navigates UDK Content Browser.
  15. Uses UDK’s Kismet to link actions in the game level.
  16. Uses UDK’s Matinee to set animated sequences.
  17. Uses Fracturing Tools to create breakable objects.
  18. Uses UDK’s Static Mesh Editor.
  19. Uses UDK’s Material Editor to create materials.
  20. Maintains a clear filing system.
